About Us:

You expect beer at a place named House of Brews.

What you might not expect, though, is a family-friendly restaurant featuring an extensive menu and live entertainment.  But that's exactly what you'll find at the HOB, a neighborhood sports grill on the southeastern corner of Cooper and Warner roads in Gilbert.

"First and foremost, we want to be known for our food," said Matt Smitherman who, with his business partner Frank Poggi, owns and operates the House of Brews. "We're a restaurant first and a bar second."

Smitherman and Poggi took ownership of the business, formerly known as the Gilbert Skybox Sports Grill, at the beginning of May.  As befits a sports grill, House of Brews has more than two dozen TV screens, plus three large screens for premium events.

Musicians play at the House of Brews every Friday and Saturday evening. Most performers are local, such as singer-guitarist Holly Kirsten, bluesman Carvin Jones and the power trio The Black Moods.  There is no cover charge or order minimum, Smitherman said.

In addition to the main bar and their dining room, the House of Brews has a side room, with a pool table and video games, that can be reserved for private parties. It seats about 40.

The patio, cooled by a mist system, seats about 30.

Along with a selection of burgers, sandwiches, salads, steaks, chicken and pasta dishes, the HOB features an array of specialty items. Other specialties include a potato soup and white Cheddar soup topped with bacon bits ($2.99), a tuna and Havarti melt with HOB fries ($7.99), fish tacos with chips and salsa ($7.99) and pork chile verde with rice and beans ($7.99). On Friday and Saturday they offer a 10-ounce prime rib with a side of lager brown sauce, baked potato and a fresh vegetable ($10.99).

Smitherman and Poggi both worked as chefs early in their careers. Each, though, had moved into other jobs - Smitherman selling restaurant equipment and Poggi working in commercial construction.  And, although Poggi had served as best man in Smitherman's wedding in Colorado over three decades ago, the friends had drifted apart over the years.

Only happenstance brought them together again - during a conversation with his waitress at Bennigan's several years ago, Poggi realized she was the daughter of his old friend.

Poggi, like Smitherman, had long toyed with the idea of owning "a good neighborhood restaurant that families can come to and enjoy sports, good food and a good beer. This was my opportunity."
